Map of the north Valley showing the AZ Law Now Anthem office on North Valley Parkway, just east of I-17 and north of Carefree Highway, with Anthem, Desert Hills, and Tramonto marked

I opened our Anthem office in November 2026, in the Tramonto office park on North Valley Parkway, right off I-17 at Carefree Highway. The reason is the same one that put us in Maricopa: the data. When I mapped every fatal large-truck crash on I-17 from Phoenix to Flagstaff, the deadliest miles weren't the mountain grades. They were the 29 miles that start at Carefree Highway and run past Anthem and Black Canyon City.

That office serves Anthem, New River, Desert Hills, Tramonto, and the rest of the north Valley. If you live up here, you shouldn't have to drive into central Phoenix to talk to a lawyer about a crash that happened on your own commute.

I-17 Past Anthem: The Data

From 2015 to 2024, 40 fatal crashes involving a large truck on the I-17 mainline killed 45 people. The stretch from Carefree Highway past Anthem and Black Canyon City to the Sunset Point rest area is about a fifth of the route. It carried 13 of those crashes and 16 of the deaths.

Measured against truck traffic, that stretch ran about 2.25 deaths per 100 million truck miles. The Phoenix metro section ran about 0.55. That's roughly four times the rate, on the miles closest to Anthem.

Bar chart: deaths in fatal large-truck crashes per 100 million truck miles on I-17, 2015 to 2024. Anthem and Black Canyon City 2.25, Camp Verde to Flagstaff 1.42, North to Camp Verde 1.39, Phoenix metro 0.55.

Most of the people who died weren't in the truck. Of the 45 killed, 37 were drivers, passengers, or pedestrians outside it. ADOT's own crash records add the people who survived: 1,198 truck crashes on I-17 that injured someone over the same ten years, hurting 1,790 people. The 29 miles past Anthem and Black Canyon City recorded the most serious injuries per truck mile on the whole route.

Where the Road Narrowed at Anthem Way

Three of the fatal rear-end truck crashes on that stretch happened at the same spot, milepost 228.7, just south of the Anthem Way exit. That's where I-17 dropped from three lanes in each direction to two. All three happened in daylight, in 2017, 2022, and 2023, and together they killed four people.

ADOT opened a third lane each way between Anthem Way and Black Canyon City in May 2025, and flex lanes on the climb north of Black Canyon City later that year. Every crash in our analysis happened before those lanes opened. Federal fatal-crash data for 2025 isn't published yet, so nobody can say from the records whether the new lanes are working. The full method and the crash map are in the I-17 truck crash investigation.

Who Investigates a Crash Up Here

It depends on where the crash happened. Arizona DPS handles crashes on I-17. The Tramonto area and the office park around us sit inside Phoenix city limits, so a surface-street crash there is usually a Phoenix police report. Anthem, New River, and Desert Hills are unincorporated Maricopa County, where the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office generally responds. Knowing which agency wrote the report is the first step to getting it.

The county line matters too. Everything from Carefree Highway to Anthem and New River is Maricopa County. Black Canyon City and the climb north of it are in Yavapai County. A crash on the far side of that line can change which court a case is filed in.

Anthem Cases by Crash Type

  • Truck crashes: I-17 freight traffic, FMCSA carrier records, driver logs, and black-box data that can be lost if nobody asks for it early.

  • Motorcycle crashes: the north Valley and the riding roads toward New River and Lake Pleasant.
  • Rideshare crashes: Uber and Lyft insurance coverage and how it applies.
  • Wrongful death: who can file, the two-year deadline, and no cap on damages in Arizona.
  • Slip and fall: proving the property owner knew, and the 180-day deadline when public property is involved.
  • Dog bites: Arizona's strict liability rule under ARS 11-1025 and its one-year deadline.

How dangerous is I-17 near Anthem?
From 2015 to 2024, the 29 miles of I-17 from Carefree Highway past Anthem and Black Canyon City to Sunset Point carried 16 of the 45 deaths in fatal large-truck crashes on the whole Phoenix-to-Flagstaff route, according to NHTSA crash data analyzed by AZ Law Now. Against truck traffic, that stretch ran about four times the Phoenix metro rate.
Which court handles an injury case from Anthem or New River?
Anthem, New River, Desert Hills, and the Tramonto area are all in Maricopa County, so a lawsuit would usually be filed in Maricopa County Superior Court. A crash farther north on I-17, around Black Canyon City and beyond, happens in Yavapai County, which can change where a case is filed.
How long do I have to file a personal injury claim?
Two years from the date of the crash under ARS 12-542. For wrongful death, two years from the date of death. If a public entity such as the state or the county may be responsible, a notice of claim is due within 180 days under ARS 12-821.01.
What types of cases does your Anthem office handle?
Car crashes, truck crashes, motorcycle crashes, rideshare crashes, pedestrian injuries, wrongful death, slip and fall, dog bites, and other personal injury claims across the north Valley.
What does it cost to hire an injury attorney?
Nothing upfront. We work on a contingency basis, and you pay nothing unless we recover money for you.
Can I recover compensation if I was partially at fault?
Yes. Arizona's pure comparative negligence rule under ARS 12-2505 reduces your recovery by your share of fault but doesn't eliminate it.

Thanks to Brendan and his team for helping me in a hard time. Dealing with your own insurance who refuses to help you out can get mentally exhausting. Stephanie was always so kind, helpful and gentle with the whole process. Even better it took way less time than I was expecting and got way more than I would have got from Kemper insurance on my own. Highly recommend! Thanks again
