Notice of Claim

What it means

A formal written notice required before suing a government entity. Must include facts establishing liability and a specific settlement demand. Arizona requires this within 180 days of the injury.

Arizona context

Under ARS 12-821.01, a Notice of Claim must be filed with the public entity within 180 days of when the cause of action accrues. The lawsuit itself must then be filed within one year. Failure to file the notice on time bars the claim entirely.
