Proximate Cause

Also known as: legal cause

What it means

The legal cause of an injury. Not just any cause-in-fact, but a cause whose connection to the harm is direct and foreseeable enough to assign legal responsibility.

Arizona context

Arizona uses a ‘substantial factor’ test for proximate cause. The defendant’s conduct must have been a substantial factor in producing the injury, not just a remote contributor.
